Sweet - The Lost Singles (2017)

The Sweet (also known as Sweet) is a British glam rock band that rose to worldwide fame in the 1970s.
Their best known line-up consisted of lead vocalist Brian Connolly, bass player Steve Priest, guitarist Andy Scott, and drummer Mick Tucker. The group was originally called Sweetshop.
The band was formed in London in 1968 and achieved their first hit, "Funny Funny", in 1971 after teaming up with songwriters Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman and record producer Phil Wainman.
During 1971 and 1972, their musical style followed a marked progression from the Archies-like bubblegum style of "Funny Funny" to a Who-influenced hard rock style supplemented by a striking use of high-pitched backing vocals.
The band first achieved success in the UK charts, with thirteen Top 20 hits during the 1970s alone, with "Block Buster!" (1973) topping the chart, followed by three consecutive number two hits in "Hell Raiser" (1973), "The Ballroom Blitz" (1973) and "Teenage Rampage" (1974).
The band turned to a more hard rock style with their mid-career singles, like 1974's "Turn It Down". "Fox on the Run" (1975) also reached number two on the UK charts.
These results were topped in West Germany and other countries on the European mainland. They also achieved success and popularity in the US with the top ten hits "Little Willy", "The Ballroom Blitz" and "Fox on the Run".
Sweet had their last Top 10 hit in 1978 with "Love Is Like Oxygen". Connolly left the group in 1979 to start a solo career and the remaining members continued as a trio until disbanding in 1981.
From the mid-1980s, Scott, Connolly and Priest each played with their own versions of Sweet at different times.
Connolly died in 1997 and Tucker in 2002.
The two surviving members are still active in their respective versions of the band; Scott's is based in the UK and Priest's in the US.

Ernie Haase + Signature Sound - Here We Are Again (2012)

Ernie Haase & Signature Sound is a Southern gospel quartet founded in 2002 by Ernie Haase, former Cathedral Quartet tenor, and Garry Jones, former Gold City pianist. In 2015, it consists of Dustin Doyle (baritone), Devin McGlamery (lead), Paul Harkey (bass) and Ernie Haase (tenor).
As of June 2015 when Doug Anderson departed the group (longest serving member), Ernie Haase is the only member from the group's inception: the lineup of the band has changed several times. The band has released 23 albums and 9 DVDs, which feature other Christian artists.
In 2004, the group changed its name to Ernie Haase and Signature Sound, reportedly in order to avoid confusion with other similarly titled regional groups.
On January 18, 2011, it was announced that bass singer Tim Duncan had left, and Ian Owens had joined the group as the new bass singer for the group. The group released a new project called "Here We Are Again" in February 2012.
One of the most popular acts in Bill Gaither's gospel stable, Ernie Haase & Signature Sound combine boy band vocal arrangements with praise & worship material, and the result feels fresh and contemporary, particularly for a Gaither artist. Here We Go Again is the group's first new studio material since 2008's Dream On, and the first release for the group on the new imprint Stowtown Records, a label venture between Haase and producer Wayne Haun.

Agnetha Fältskog - När en vacker tanke blir en sång (1971)

Agnetha Åse Fältskog (born 5 April 1950) is a Swedish musician, singer, songwriter, actress, and author. She achieved success in Sweden after the release of her debut album Agnetha Fältskog in 1968, and reached international stardom as a member of the pop group ABBA, which has sold over 380 million albums and singles worldwide, making them one of the best-selling music artists in history
När en vacker tanke blir en sång ("When a Beautiful Thought Becomes a Song") is the fourth Swedish solo album by Swedish pop singer and ABBA member Agnetha Fältskog, which was released in the end of 1971.
After producing a large part of her previous album "Som jag är", Agnetha's fiancé Björn Ulvaeus this time produced the entire album. They got married on the 6 July 1971. The recording of the album took place on various occasions during 1971, beginning in May, continuing through July and October and ending on 4 November. As with her previous albums, the recording was assisted by Michael B. Tretow and features Sven-Olof Walldoff and his choir and orchestra.
Contrary to its predecessor "Som jag är", which mainly included cover versions and only two new Agnetha compositions, Agnetha's fourth studio album consists almost entirely of her own work. The last track, "Dröm är dröm, och saga saga", being the only exception, because it's a cover version of Anna Identici's hit Era bello il mio ragazzo. Considering the fact that she also wrote some of the lyrics herself or together with producer Björn Ulvaeus, "När en vacker tanke blir en sång" (the title coming from the first line of the lyrics of "Då finns du hos mig") can be seen as the most personal and self-written album of her career (its successor "Elva kvinnor i ett hus" includes ten Agnetha composition, yet no lyrics by her).
The above-mentioned "Dröm är dröm, och saga saga" marks also one of the first occasions that all four of the future ABBA members can be heard on the same recording. Additionally, both Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad also contributed to some other tracks on the album:
  • Benny Andersson plays piano on: "Många gånger än", "Nya ord","Jag skall inte fälla några tårar" and "Då finns du hos mig"
  • Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad sing background on: "Kanske var min kind lite het", "Sången föder dig tillbaka", "Tågen kan gå igen" and "Dröm är dröm, och saga saga"
Three years after its original release, the album was re-released in 1974 by Swedish label Embassy (EMB 31094) with a new cover and the simple title "Agnetha". Finally, "När en vacker tanke blir en sång" was released on CD for the first time in 2004 as part of the box-set "De första åren".

Toni Willé - Fantastic Stories (feat. the voice of pussycat) (2012)

Ton Scherpenzeel - Le Carnaval Des Animaux (1978)

The Oscar Peterson Trio - Night Train (1963)

Night Train is an album by the Oscar Peterson Trio, released in 1963 by Verve Records. It was one of Peterson's most commercially successful recordings.
Album producer Norman Granz had sold the record label Verve, but remained Peterson's manager, and so supervised the Night Train recording session.
The brief duration of many of the tracks has been attributed to a desire to have them played on commercial radio, which was reluctant to play any tracks longer than a few minutes.
The cover art photograph is by Pete Turner and original sleeve notes were by Benny Green.
On the title track, "After the opening theme choruses, Peterson slips into a 2-chorus solo. Then the theme returns, and we realize that all the while, the band has gotten softer and softer. This leads into Brown's solo, which is unaccompanied to start, and then adds, in turn, Peterson and Thigpen. When Peterson comes in for another chorus of solo, everything starts to build again. Peterson plays a boogie figure in the bass to build the intensity, and then the trio plays a simple but effective shout chorus and then goes back to the theme with a strong crescendo to nearly the end, with a traditional Count Basie tag to close the track. By using the basic elements of crescendo and diminuendo, and arranged sections to set off the parts, Peterson turns what could have been a throwaway into a minor masterpiece."
Ed Thigpen's rivet cymbal, recorded at very close range, is prominent on all issues of the album.

UB40 - Baggariddim (1985)

Baggariddim combines a thoroughly appealing three-song EP, highlighted by the catchy "Don't Break My Heart" and a duet with Chrissie Hynde on Sonny & Cher's "I Got You Babe," with dub mixes of cuts from Labour of Love and Geffery Morgan, which feature guest toasters on almost every song.
The dubs are among the strongest the band have ever released, emphasizing their reggae roots, and the new material is melodic and engaging, making Baggariddim a strong follow-up to two of their finest albums.

As the title suggests, this is a 'riddim' album - the same tune with different toasters & chatters. It has a very authentic deejay reggae sound, with some notable names, not least the mighty Dillinger, who does a great job. Long-time UB associate Pato Banton turns out a good chat on 'King Step', as do unknowns Gunslinger (on 'Buzz Feeling', but less so on 'Two in a One') Stone and Pablo.

Tracklist
  1. "The King Step Mk.1" (feat. Pato Banton over "If It Happens Again") – 3;32
  2. "The Buzz Feeling" (feat. Gunslinger over "Cherry Oh Baby") – 3;41

  4. "Demonstrate" (feat. Admiral Jerry over "As Always You Were Wrong Again") – 3:55
  5. "Two in a One Mk.1" (feat. Pablo & Gunslinger over "The Pillow") – 3:18
  6. "Hold Your Position Mk.3" (feat. Stones over "If It Happens Again") – 3:56

Tom T. Hall ‎- A Soldier Of Fortune (1980)

Thomas "Tom T." Hall (born May 25, 1936 in Olive Hill, Kentucky) is an American country music songwriter, singer, instrumentalist, novelist, and short-story writer.
He has written 11 No. 1 hit songs, with 26 more that reached the Top 10, including the No. 1 international pop crossover smash "Harper Valley PTA" and the hit "I Love", which reached No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. He became known to fans as "The Storyteller," thanks to his storytelling skills in his songwriting.

Sad looking' T with a hole in the elbow of his shirt, waiting on a broad that has apparently stepped away for a moment, leaving behind her empty snifter and her mink/leopard skin coat.  Note that she's got her handbag on the floor - definitely gives the impression of a fleeting relationship between the two……
As for the music, Old T. continues his greatness.  Best songs are the title track, "Texas Never Fell In Love With Me" and "Whiskey Castles".
His rough and tumble singing sometimes feel like a bumpy ride on a rocky road in a car without shocks. Nevertheless, road trips with Hall are - more often than not - memorable journeys.
This recording oftentimes sounds like a relic from the old country-politan days of the Seventies, which gave us all those classic Tammy Wynette and George Jones recordings. Oddly enough, though, the great sibling bluegrass vocals of the Osbourne Brothers can be heard clearly over the omnipresent string arrangements and sugary backup vocals that dominate throughout. Elsewhere, on tracks such as "Back When Gas Was Thirty Cents A Gallon," Ozzie Osment's sweet traditional fiddling succeeds in leaving a lingeringly positive impression.
Hall may have settled for some rather incongruent instrumentation on this release, but his personalized songwriting never fails to impress. Whether he's singing about class differences in "The Six O'clock News," or describing his inability to fit into the Texas lifestyle with "Texas Never Fell In Love With Me," Hall is ever the convincing storyteller.
Many have taken songs written by others and made them sound like their own, but few have pressed their unique fingerprints onto their songs as well as Hall.

Jermaine Stewart - Say It Again (1988)

William Jermaine Stewart was born in Columbus, Ohio, to Ethel and Eugene Stewart. In 1972, his family moved to Chicago, Illinois, where Stewart took his first steps toward a career in entertainment. Eventually he gained recognition as a dancer on the locally produced television show Soul Train. While working there he befriended two other Soul Train dancers, fellow Chicagoan Jody Watley and Jeffrey Daniel. After Soul Train relocated to Los Angeles, the three friends auditioned to become members of the group Shalamar, which was put together by Soul Train creator Don Cornelius and booking agent Dick Griffey. Watley and Daniels were selected for the group as backup/semi-lead vocalists, and Stewart lost out to Gary Mumford during his audition for lead vocalist. However, Stewart toured with the new group as a dancer for several years, and while in London for a show, he met Mikey Craig of Culture Club.
Realizing that Stewart was a talented singer, Craig assisted him in putting together a demo tape, and Stewart was given the opportunity to sing background vocals on Culture Club's song "Miss Me Blind". As a result of the combination of a strong demo and his ties with Culture Club, he landed a recording contract with Arista Records.

Stewart's third album was entitled Say It Again, with production handled largely by André Cymone. Supported by international live dates with his band The Party, the title track "Say It Again" became Stewart's second US Top 40 Billboard hit, and also reached the US R&B Top 10.

Eric Burdon & Band - That's Live (1985)

That’s Live is a live album by Eric Burdon and his band, recorded live in Karlsruhe, Germany, on 8 March 1985, during a European tour. It was originally marked Limited Compact Disc Reference Edition in 1985, and achieved more widespread release in 1992.
That’s Live is the only recording made of this line-up which, during the immediately prior period of 1981-84, had been one of the first Western rock acts to play extensively in the Eastern Bloc, including pre-unification East Germany, where, according to bassist Rob Burns, the band were "treated like royalty".
In April 1981, Christine Buschmann began to film Comeback with Burdon as the star.
They created a new "Eric Burdon Band" whose line-up included Louisiana Red, Tony Braunagle, John Sterling and Snuffy Walden.

Bobby Bland - Dreamer (1974)

Robert Calvin Bland (Robert Calvin Brooks; January 27, 1930 – June 23, 2013), known professionally as Bobby "Blue" Bland, was an American blues singer.
Bland developed a sound that mixed gospel with the blues and R&B. He was described as "among the great storytellers of blues and soul music... [who] created tempestuous arias of love, betrayal and resignation, set against roiling, dramatic orchestrations, and left the listener drained but awed." He was sometimes referred to as the "Lion of the Blues" and as the "Sinatra of the Blues". His music was also influenced by Nat King Cole.
Bland was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1981, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992, and the Memphis Music Hall of Fame in 2012. He received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame described him as "second in stature only to B.B. King as a product of Memphis's Beale Street blues scene".
Bland's vocals are always great, good to hear him in a more modern context, with good production and top level studio musicians. The style is smooth early fusion/RnB. Sidemen are excellent, sound is rich - horns and occasional strings - good sounding record.

The Police - 'Derangements' by Stewart Copeland (2006)

The (probable) lore: “Derangements consisted of a 7 track CD with new interpretations of Police songs by Stewart Copeland for his Police documentary “Everyone Stares”, released in 2006.
These tracks were expected to be included as bonus tracks on new Police catalog reissues following the 2002 release of “The Very Best Of...Sting & The Police”, but due to objections by Sting (rumor), this never moved forward.
They will likely never be released officially in any form due to the complicated licensing and permission issues between the multiple parties (band, management, EMI, etc.).”
I originally received this disc from a fairly dedicated and connected Police fan in late 2004/early 2005.
Stewart did an amazing job on these remixes and the result is a set of very listenable, re-imagined Police tracks. It’s really a shame it will never see the light of day, officially.
