Steve Miller Band - The Best Of 1968-1973 [1990]

The Best of 1968-1973 is a solid collection that features many of the highlights from Steve Miller's first five years of recording, including "The Joker," "Living in the U.S.A.," "Space Cowboy," and "Gangster of Love." 

Steve Miller Band's The Best Of 1968-1973 is a reworking of the fantastic 1972 Anthology album, adding a few tracks from The Joker and deleting some older tracks while completely glossing over material from Rock Love and Recall The Beginning-Journey From Eden. I completely fail to see the purpose of this collection as both the original, and significantly better Anthology as well as Greatest Hits 1974-78 were reissued in 1990, the same year Capitol released this very redundant compilation. It would have made sense to add the additional tracks from The Joker ("Shu Ba Da Du Ma Ma Ma Ma", "Sugar Babe", "Come On in my Kitchen" and "Evil") to the Greatest Hits 1974-78 collection and add "Song For Our Ancestors" and "Jackson Kent Blues" to Anthology. Of course this would leave behind both "Quicksilver Girl" and "Gangster of Love", both of which work much better within the context of their original album than on a compilation.

This compilation isn't as consistently thrilling as Greatest Hits 1974-1978, which also features "The Joker," and it's not as sharply assembled as 1972's Anthology, but it remains an adequate overview of Miller's early records, especially for fans only familiar with Greatest Hits. 

These early strikes saw Steve rise from blues-rocker to stadium filler. His first hits Living in the U.S.A.; Going to the Country, and the Joker join Space Cowboy; Gangster of Love; Seasons; My Dark Hour; Evil, and more early essentials plus bonus tracks!

Dire Straits - San Francisco (Live Radio Broadcast) [1979]

Here is a concert from the beginning of Dire Straits recorded in San Francisco in 1979 and broadcast on the radio (14 tracks). 

The sound is just perfect. Knopfler's band perform almost all of their 1st album (only Setting me up is missing), the fact that they only sing 3 tracks from the 2nd album (Communiqué) maybe means they weren't yet appeared (July 1979) but that he was testing new titles in public. 

We have no indication either of the precise date or of the place of recording (concert hall or radio studio given the quality of the sound). 

In any case titles like Down to the waterline, Lady writer or obviously Sultans of swing still work marvelously 40 years later, the quality of writing and the guitar playing of Knopfler being of extreme finesse and efficiency. 

What really annoyed me, however, is the complete lack of booklet, info and even the obligatory credits of the songs are not indicated!!! It's a bit of mocking the listener. 

So, yes, fans will be delighted to find this concert which will complete their collection and takes a very good place following Live at the BBC (recorded in 1978 and released in 1995).

Sting & Edin Karamazov - The Journey & The Labyrinth (The Music Of John Dowland) [2006]

Songs from the Labyrinth is the eighth studio album by British singer-songwriter Sting. On this album, he collaborates with Bosnian lutenist Edin Karamazov. 

The album features music by John Dowland (1563–1626), a lutenist and songwriter. It entered the UK Official Albums Chart at #24 and reached #25 on the Billboard 200, strong charting peaks for a classical record on the pop album charts. 

The release was a slow seller for a Sting album, his first since 1986's Bring on the Night to fail to break the UK top 10.

In 2006, Sting took a shot at performing the songs of Elizabethan composer John Dowland. It was a bit of a gamble and, if Sting does not win the pot, he at least broke even. Edin Karamazov does a commendable job on the lute though Sting's vocals seem a little off since his voice remains grounded in our time and not Dowland's. Fans of Dowland will probably find this effort jarring. But it does serve as an excellent--and accessible--intro to Dowland and that shouldn't be discounted. 

Sting is shrewd enough to include a wide range of Dowland's songs, from the uplifting "Come Again" to the melancholy "In Darkness Let Me Dwell" and, of course, "Flow My Tears." Karamazov also has a few solo tracks which are excellent. 

Sting's recitation of a letter from Dowland seems out of place and, at times, grates. Still this is a solid effort and not a bad choice for people coming to Dowland for the first time. At the very least, people who come across Dowland's name in odd places (the novels of Philip K. Dick for example) can pick up the CD and get an introduction to a musical genius from 400 years ago.

For the original CD program, the music was that of the 16th century British composer John Dowland, except for "Have You Seen the Bright Lily Grow", a song by Dowland's contemporary Robert Johnson.

The Heart of Rock & Roll – The Best of Huey Lewis and The News is a compilation album by American rock band Huey Lewis and the News, released in 1992. 

It includes singles and album tracks from five of the band's studio albums―Huey Lewis and the News (1980), Picture This (1982), Sports (1983), Fore! (1986) and Small World (1988)―plus two tracks from the Back to the Future soundtrack (1985) and a live B-side.

For four years, the U.K. compilation The Heart of Rock & Roll: The Best of Huey Lewis & the News was the only hits collection available on the San Franciscan bar band, and in some ways it's a better overview than the American retrospective, Time Flies. 

Although it does include a live version of "Workin' for a Livin'" and overlooks "Doing It All for My Baby" and "I Know What I Like," it contains several key tracks that aren't on Time Flies: "Hip to Be Square," "Back in Time" (which is only available on the Back to the Future soundtrack), "Jacob's Ladder," "Perfect World," the We Are the World track "Trouble in Paradise," and the terrific LP cut "Some of My Lies Are True." These tracks are added to the familiar hits to make The Heart of Rock & Roll a more thorough retrospective, and, in many ways, a better introduction than Time Flies.

Falco - Greatest Hits [1999]

Johann "Hans" Hölzel; 19 February 1957 – 6 February 1998), better known by his stage name Falco, was an Austrian singer and musician. He had several international hits including "Der Kommissar" (1981), "Rock Me Amadeus",^[1] "Vienna Calling", "Jeanny", "The Sound of Musik", "Coming Home (Jeanny Part II, One Year Later)", and posthumously "Out of the Dark".

"Rock Me Amadeus" reached No. 1 on the Billboard charts in 1986, making Falco the only artist in history whose principal language was German, to score a vocal number-one hit in the United States. According to his estate, he has sold 20 million albums and 40 million singles, which makes him the best-selling Austrian singer of all time.

Also notable was his very early creation of a successful non-English language rap music song (Der Kommissar), recorded in December 1981

Most people know Falco for 'Rock me Amadeus' but admittedly I was well aware of him before that via Euro compilations that included his hit 'Der Kommissar'.

An excellent CD that really grows on you even if you only know 'Rock me Amadeus'. For those unfamiliar with his music, the songs are in Austrian (i.e. Standard German) with some songs having a "The Cars" sound and others a same period "Bowie" sound to them just to give you an idea of his diversity. Having said that, Falco is Falco and to sell him short by comparison to others is unfair. Listen to the sound bites of his songs and you will get an idea of how talented he is.

Hans de Booij - Het Beste Van Hans De Booij [1990]

Hans de Booij (Arnhem, 2 juni 1958) is een Nederlandse zanger en liedjesschrijver.

De Booij studeerde kleinkunst in Antwerpen en werd daarna theatertechnicus voor onder andere Boudewijn de Groot.

In het begin van de jaren tachtig vormde hij met Alain Mazijn de cabaretgroep Circus Stupido. Ze brachten een single uit (We gaan en Alles is al gezegd), geproduceerd door Bram Vermeulen. De groep Golden Delicious verzorgde de begeleiding.

Muziekuitgever Hans Kusters stelde hem in 1983 in staat zijn eerste album op te nemen. Dit album, genaamd Hans de Booij was zowel in België als in Nederland een succes. De bijbehorende single Een vrouw zoals jij, die voorafgaande het album verscheen, bereikte de 20e plaats in de Nederlandse Top 40. In de zomer van 1983 verscheen de single Annabel, dat een bewerking was van een nummer dat Boudewijn de Groot en Herman Pieter de Boer, oorspronkelijk hadden bedoeld voor het album van de eerste, Van een afstand. De muziek werd verzorgd door Ruud van Es en Peter Kommers van de band Nova, in wiens studio het nummer ook werd opgenomen. De single, met als b-kant De Booij’s eigen compositie Dominique, bereikte de derde plaats van de Top 40. Hierop werd het album opnieuw uitgegeven in een versie waarop de nummers van de eerste zijde van de plaat op de tweede zijde van de plaat werden gezet en Annabel als eerste nummer op de a-kant op het album, voor de oorspronkelijke b-kant, werd ingevoegd.

Het album Vermoeden van Vrijheid bracht de hit Thuis ben, dat een bewerking was van De Booy's pianochanson Vermoeden van vrijheid waarvoor Herman Pieter de Boer de tekst herschreef en de muziek werd bewerkt tot een popsong. Op de plaat was ook een bewerking te horen van Eric Claptons Wonderful Tonight en het nummer Vrolijke violen, dat evenals Annabel geschreven werd door Boudewijn de Groot en Herman Pieter de Boer.

De Booij voelde zich echter ongelukkig in de gekozen muzikale koers. Zijn eigen werk viel veel meer in de categorie grimmige chansons, zoals Jacques Brel en Ramses Shaffy die vertolkten. In de tweede helft van de jaren tachtig legde hij zich steeds meer toe op die stijl en verder plaatsucces bleef uit. Wel trad De Booij in de loop der jaren regelmatig op in theaters en in Antwerpse cafés. Zo bracht hij de evergreen De lichtjes van de Schelde van Bobbejaan Schoepen uit 1952 weer onder de aandacht. De Booij kwam verder in het nieuws doordat hij persoonlijk failliet ging, een dronken schermutseling met de Antwerpse politie had (de rechter stelde hem later in het gelijk). Ook gaf hij een boek uit waarin hij zijn persoonlijke levensfilosofie beschreef en waarbij hij onder meer pleitte voor de oprichting van een Ministerie van Liefde. De Booij ging maandenlang met een rugzak vol boeken door het land om zijn boeken deur aan deur te verkopen. Uiteindelijk wist hij er meer dan 4000 te verkopen.

In 1999 ontmoette De Booij toevallig de veertiende dalai lama voor de Schouwburg van Antwerpen en voelde hij zich sterk aangetrokken tot de geweldloosheid zoals die gepredikt wordt door het boeddhisme. Terugkijkend op de diepe dalen in zijn leven vertelde De Booij: "Ik ben rijk geworden door een hele tijd geen geld te hebben."

De Booij, die inmiddels in het Belgische Oostende woonde, keerde in 2007 met een nieuwe band terug op de Nederlandse podia en zong liedjes van zijn album Emocratie dat in september was uitgekomen. In interviews zegt hij teleurgesteld te zijn in de Nederlandse muziekcultuur, omdat de publieke radiozenders nauwelijks nog Nederlandstalig repertoire draaien.

In 2008 vertrok De Booij naar Thailand, waar hij op het eiland Koh Phagang woont en ging werken aan zijn comeback, samen met musicus-producer Hans Vermeulen (Sandy Coast, Rainbow Train). In oktober 2009 verscheen zijn cd Ontsnapt aan een kokosnoot, in 2010 was er een Nederlandse tournee. In 2011 nam hij samen met de Nederlandse rapper Sef het nummer Diamanten op.

In 2012 maakte De Booij een nummer getiteld Verkiezingen 12 september. In april van 2012 trouwde De Booij in Thailand. In 2014 verscheen de single Halleloejah! en een jaar later de single Niets = voor altijd in samenwerking met De kleinkunstROCKband, waarmee hij in 2015 en 2016 op verschillende locaties in Nederland en België optrad.

Eind 2020 maakte hij zijn comeback als zanger met de single De knecht. In november 2020 kwam zijn nieuwe album uit, gepresenteerd in april 2021, Hoe had ik het anders moeten doen?.

Bruce Springsteen & The E-Street Band - Hard Rock Live, Hollywood, FL (7 february 2023)

The set list covered 28 songs with “No Surrender” opening the show. Wearing black pants and a fitted black tee, Bruce seemed incredibly fit. I have to say, 73 looks really good on him.

In between songs, Bruce took some time for a long chat with the audience, sharing about his first band from the time when he was 15, he joked about previous band titles and also talked about an emotional time from when he lost his friend and band mate George Theiss who died in 2018. “at 15 I joined my first real rock and roll band and we lasted for 3 years which for teenagers is incredible”.

Bruce displays a genuine expression of someone who wears his heart on his sleeve. He works hard on stage and truly enjoys collaborating and performing with others in the band. His trademark smile brings fans to appeal for a hand touch and closer connection.

Bruce’s stage presence and stamina brings magic to fans of all ages. The lucky fans in the pit area didn’t’ take a rest. That was even more evident during “Born to Run” with the entire crowd dancing and bouncing in a choreographic sequence. 

The show ended with the performance of “Rosalita”, “Glory Days’, “Dancing in the Dark”, “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out” and “I’ll See You in My Dreams”. The Boss with nothing to prove, still made sure that fans would not be disappointed.

The Tour will continue throughout the United States before heading to Europe in April 2023.

Earth & Fire - The Singles [1995]

Earth & Fire (ook Earth and Fire) was een Nederlandse popgroep uit de jaren zeventig en tachtig van de 20e eeuw. De leden waren afkomstig uit Voorschoten, Voorburg en Leidschendam. 

De groep had als voornaamste bandleden Jerney Kaagman (zang) en de tweelingbroers Gerard (keyboards) en Chris Koerts (gitaar). 

De overige bandleden wisselden in de loop van de tijd. Drummer op de eerste twee hits is Cees Kalis, die daarna koos voor een baan in het onderwijs en werd vervangen door Ton van der Kleij. Basgitarist Hans Ziech werd in 1974 vervangen door Theo Hurts, die in 1978 werd opgevolgd door Bert Ruiter.

De band die hun beste muziek maakte in het post-hippie tijdperk. Hun "intelligente" popmuziek is onlosmakelijke verbonden met de jaren 70. 

Op de elpees uit die tijd verzandde de muziek nogal eens in langdurende psychedelische experimenten. Hoogtepunten waren en blijven de singles die we kenden van de radio. Deze singles staan nu op een CD. Voor wie de seventies bewust of "onbewust" heeft meegemaakt zal deze CD een feest der herkenning zijn.

Behalve dat Earth and Fire flink aan de weg timmerden met hun singles , brachten ze ook wat ambitieus aandoende en symfo getinte lp's uit. Song of the marching children en Atlantis zijn de bekendste.

Vanaf 1970 tot en met 1974 bracht deze Nederlandse formatie ons opvallende singles met een hoog hitniveau.

Na 1974 ging het vrij snel bergafwaarts met de groep. Mislukte disco uitstapjes en een veel gladdere sound. 

Het nummer Weekend zorgde nog voor een korte en geslaagde opleving in 1979.

Daarna kwam aan het grote succes van de band langzamerhand een einde.

Grand Funk Railroad - Capitol Collector Series [1991]

Capitol Collector Series is a compilation album from Grand Funk Railroad released in 1991. In January 2002, the album was certified Gold by the RIAA.

Grand Funk Railroad was, at best, a singles band, capable of turning a couple of crunching rockers and hooky singles out with each album. Though it may be missing a fan favorite or two -- and that could mean something concise and catchy or meandering jams like "T.N.U.C." -- this does have the overwhelming majority of their best songs, including not just hits like "We're an American Band" and "Some Kind of Wonderful," but also album tracks.
