David Bowie - The Gouster (2016)

Tussen 1974 en 1976 bracht David Bowie drie albums uit. Het was de periode net voor hij in Berlijn zou gaan wonen en zichzelf (weer) geheel opnieuw uitvond. 

Uiteindelijk resulterend in enkele geweldige albums die de tand des tijds nog altijd prima doorstaan. Kort voor die periode maakte Bowie echter nóg een album: The Gouster. 

Alleen besloot hij de plaat kort voor de release terug te trekken. Enkele nummers van The Gouster verschenen later op zijn volgende plaat: Young Americans. 

Waaronder het titelnummer. In 2016 werd The Gouster, nadat David Bowie op 10 januari 2016 aan leverkanker overleed, alsnog uitgebracht. Als onderdeel van een 12-delige cd boxset over de periode 1974-1976. Al zijn er fans die blijven volhouden dat er nog altijd songs op horen te staan die niet op deze versie te vinden zijn.

Bowie was begin jaren zeventig in relatief korte tijd uitgegroeid tot een popicoon. Naar zijn albums werd opeens reikhalzend uitgekeken. 

Maar zijn laatste album Diamond Dogs was met gemengde kritieken ontvangen. Toch bleven de verwachtingen hoog. Bowie bleef, ondanks (of dankzij) steeds excessiever drugsgebruik, de ene na de andere plaat uitbrengen. Waarbij hij zich meestal met een alter ego presenteerde. Van Major Tom via Ziggy Stardust naar The Thin White Duke. 

De opnames van The Gouster vonden plaats tijdens een pauze in zijn Amerikaanse tour in 1974. Bowie was in die periode een groot fan van het Amerikaanse televisieprogramma Soultrain, waarin enkel en alleen (de titel zegt het al) soulmuziek te horen was. 

In de tourbus werd ook graag geluisterd naar soulmuziek op Amerikaanse radiozenders. Het inspireerde Bowie en hij besloot twee weken de studio Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia in te duiken om een nieuw album op te nemen. 

Tony Visconti werd ingevlogen om de opnames te produceren. In korte tijd werd een tiental songs opgenomen. In vrijwel alle tracks sijpelt de soul duidelijk door. ‘Gouster’ is niet voor niets straattaal voor een soulman: het type Afro-Amerikaan dat zich met een eigen kledingkeuze, haardracht en eigen straattaal onderscheidde. 

Het album lag klaar om uitgebracht te worden. Alleen kwam het nooit in de winkels terecht. Daarvoor waren meerdere redenen.

Eigenlijk was het album een hommage van Bowie aan de soulmuziek waar hij altijd al groot fan van was geweest. 

Maar anders dan Pin Ups, waarop hij zijn favoriete songs op zijn eigen wijze inkleurde, was The Gouster, achteraf beschouwd, waarschijnlijk eerder een vingeroefening voor Young Americans. Op dat album creëerde Bowie zijn eigen versie van soulmuziek. The Gouster was kaler en miste een ‘eigen Bowie-geluid’. 

Het plan was in eerste instantie het album in één sessie live op te nemen. Dat is te horen, de opnames klinken behoorlijk rauw. Vier nummers haalden het vinyl alsnog op Young Americans, maar in andere versies. 

Een van de redenen dat Bowie uiteindelijk besloot het album niet uit te brengen was dat hij enkele nummers te persoonlijk zou hebben gevonden. Dat althans zou hij tegen Visconti hebben gezegd. Daarbij was er twijfel over hoe de plaat zou vallen bij zijn publiek. 

De overgang van de glamrock van Diamond Dogs naar de soul van The Gouster zou weleens een te grote overgang kunnen zijn, was de gedachte. 

Een nummer als de versie van zijn al in 1972 geschreven nummer John, I’m Only Dancing (Again) had bijvoorbeeld een behoorlijk discotintje. Op dat moment was dat wel erg ver weg van wat Bowie deed en waar hij voor stond. 

Toen het nummer in 1979, in weer een ander jasje, alsnog als single uitkwam, paste het wel perfect.

Goldie Hawn - Goldie (1972)

In 1972, Hawn recorded and released a solo country LP for Warner Brothers, titled Goldie. It was recorded with the help of Dolly Parton and Buck Owens. 

It's a tragedy of pop culture in the new millennium that starlets don't rush willy-nilly into the recording studio anywhere near as much as they used to. 

Goldie Hawn's sole foray into pop music -- originally released in 1972 on Warner Bros. after Laugh-In but before Steven Spielberg's Sugarland Express revealed her dramatic range as an actress -- isn't Golden Throats-level bad, surely to the disappointment of hipsters everywhere. 

Although Hawn's helium-pitched voice is a trifle thin and limited, the selection of material wisely plays to her strengths, with Dolly Parton's "My Blue Tears" and -- believe it or not -- Joni Mitchell's "Carey" both well-suited to her soprano vocals. 

In fact, the only really egregious errors aren't really her fault: the Frenchified "Butterfly," with its absurdly cheesy choral backing, wouldn't have sounded good sung by anybody, and the countrified take on Van Morrison's "I Wanna Roo You" has a botched arrangement that slaps on a vaguely oompah-style waltz-time arrangement that suits neither singer nor song. 

Other than that, though, Goldie is a sweetly endearing country-tinged middle of the road pop record of a style that just isn't being made anymore.

Yazoo - The 12 Inch Mixes (1993)

Yazoo (known as Yaz in North America) were an English synth-pop duo from Basildon, Essex, consisting of former Depeche Mode member Vince Clarke (keyboards) and Alison Moyet (vocals). 

The duo formed in late 1981 after Clarke responded to an advertisement Moyet placed in a British music magazine, although the pair had known each other since their school days.

Over the next 18 months the duo released two albums, Upstairs at Eric's and You and Me Both, which received critical acclaim for their production, particularly the blending of Clarke's synthesizer melodies with Moyet's blues- and soul-influenced vocals.

Yazoo enjoyed worldwide success, but were particularly popular in their home country, where three of their four singles reached the top three of the UK Singles Chart and both their albums made the top two of the UK Albums Chart. 

In North America, they are known for the song "Situation", which, though originally only a B-side in the United Kingdom, was a club and airplay success in the United States and Canada before being released as the band's debut single in North America.

Despite their success, the duo split acrimoniously in May 1983 as a result of a combination of Clarke's reluctance to make more records under the Yazoo name, a clash of personalities, and a lack of communication between the pair.

From Techno Classic DJ Service this brings a mixture of original Yazoo 12″‘s and some megamixes all on a handy compilation released in 1993 on CD.
They all sound excellent and offer an alternative listen to what is dished up on Spotify. They keep the early 80’s sound but it so clear.
Personally loved hearing “The Other Side Of Love” – a forgotten Yazoo classic. The Re-s Situated “Situation” loud and full of electronic percussion and vocoder!
The megamixes are a bit D.I.Y. and done live with added overdubs and effects, but aren’t they all ? (A bit a guess what tunes next)

Brotherhood Of Man - Singing A Song (1979)

Brotherhood of Man are a British pop group who achieved success in the 1970s. They won the 1976 Eurovision Song Contest with "Save Your Kisses for Me".

Singing a Song is a 1979 album by British pop group Brotherhood of Man. It was released in December and was their final album for Pye Records after several years with the label.

The album was released on Pye Records in December 1979 and was their final album with the label. Pye Records was about to fold at this point, and this album was released to finish their contract and was made up of previously unreleased and rare material. 

With minimal promotion and the group not having had a hit single for over a year, the album failed to chart. The album featured no singles in the UK, but track "Singing a Song" was released as a single in Spain.

Tracks "The Circus Came to Town" and "Got a Funny Feeling" had been released in Europe as B-Sides in 1977 and 1976 respectively. 

Track "Caravan" was referred to on the label as "Our Caravan". According to member Lee Sheriden, female members Sandra Stevens and Nicky Stevens were unhappy with the song "Andy McDougal" claiming the lyrics to be sexist and requested the record company not to release it. Sheriden as the co-writer defended the song as an innocent children's pop song. 

Member Martin Lee has stated that "The Circus Came to Town" is his favourite of their own songs.

The album received a favourable review in the now defunct music paper Superpop, stating: "The group are at their best on the bouncier numbers and "Willie", "Got a Funny Feeling" and "Andy McDougal" are the pick of this platter. 

The only criticism I have of Singing a Song is that on several numbers the group sound stilted - a fault that is not evident in their very entertaining live show or any of their past single smashes".

U.K. - The Sahara Of Snow (1979)

Live at El Mocambo Club, Toronto, Ontario, Canada June 27, 1978.

U.K. were a British progressive rock supergroup originally active from 1977 to 1980. 

The band was founded by bass guitarist John Wetton and drummer Bill Bruford, formerly the rhythm section of King Crimson. 

The band was rounded out by violinist/keyboardist Eddie Jobson, and guitarist Allan Holdsworth. 

Bruford and Holdsworth left in 1978, and Bruford was replaced by drummer Terry Bozzio. 

Throughout their brief existence, U.K.'s music was characterised by skilled musicianship, jazzy harmonies, close harmony vocals, mixed meters, electric violin solos, and unusually varied synthesiser (Yamaha CS-80) sonorities. 

Relative to specific styles, the band spans various genres ranging from progressive rock to jazz fusion.

This recording comes from the heavily booted Boston 1978 FM radio show featuring the first line-up of the group with Allan Holdsworth (electric guitar) and Bill Bruford (drums). 

The most important tracks are three pieces which were re-worked on the next studio LP, Danger Money: "The Only Thing She Needs," "Carrying No Cross," and "Caesar's Palace Blues." 

Each of these songs contains wildly different group arrangements and is worth hearing in their initial form. 

It is no surprise to identify the jazz elements injected specifically from Bruford and Holdsworth that give each track a noticeable guitar context. 

"The Only Thing She Needs" benefits from Bruford's adept top kit drumming style and a looser tempo. 

"Carrying No Cross" includes a Latin midsection which is quite impressive, while "Caesar's Palace Blues" is more syncopated rhythmically with Holdsworth's leads playing off Jobson's pizzicato violin during the intro. 

"The Sahara of Snow," this recording provides distinct clues as to how close the original quartet was to completing their second album before the band split.

The Most Secret Method - Get Lovely (1998)

Formed in the middle of the 1990s -- their first gig was at the semi-legendary Black Cat Club in Washington, D.C. in 1996 -- the Most Secret Method represented part of the vanguard that was to represent the new direction that the D.C. scene was moving in as the 21st century approached. 

First initiated by musical musings by former Fine Day member Marc Nelson and Lincoln bassist Johanna Claasen, they would eventually rope in Marc's brother Ryan (formerly of Jury Rig) to round out the three-piece, and in Ryan they would find the graphically oriented presentation that the band would become well known for. 

Their first two recordings, a self-released 7", and a split 10" with the Capitol City Dusters (featuring former Severin frontman Alec Bourgeois) on Superbad and Dischord, were enough -- coupled with amazing gigs and Ryan Nelson's unforgettable poster/flyer drawings that were both intriguing and (sometimes) disturbing -- to secure the band a few tours and a full-length release, Get Lovely, in 1998 on Slowdime. 

After a period of silence from the band in which Claasen focused on standup bass, Ryan Nelson spent time with his new musical mates in Beauty Pill, and Marc Nelson devoted time to acting, Our Success was released as a full-length split release on Bourgeois' SuperBad label and Dischord. 

The band played a farewell show in August of 2002 right where they started, at the Black Cat in D.C.

Peter En Zijn Rockets - Singles As and Rarities (3CD) (2004)

Harry Jager, ex medewerker bij Phonogram, nam het initiatief om een triple CD samen te stellen van alle "normale" singles alsmede rariteiten op single gebied, die Phonogram van Peter Koelewijn, al of niet met zijn Rockets, had uitgebracht. De CD werd begin 2004 gereleased door Universal en Harry's firma, Hunter Music, tekende voor de samenstelling, hoes enz.

Jager sprak het project, in de tweede helft van 2003, goed door met Peter Koelewijn. Die had al jaren een paar wensen wat betreft het uitbrengen op CD van diverse tracks, die óf totaal onbekend waren óf zelfs nooit op de markt waren verschenen.

Want toen Peter z'n personal site gestalte aan het geven was, stuitte hij

namenlijk op een paar vreemde zaken. Zo vond hij op de site van de, veel te vroeg overleden, Eindhovenaar Wim v.d. Mark (die een gigantisch archief had opgebouwd met o.a. materiaal van Eindhovense artiesten, dus ook Peter Koelewijn)op de Peter en zijn Rockets plaat "Bonnie Brons" met als B-kant "'t Is over". Het plaatnummer én de maatschappij stonden er bij: DECCA FM 264422, release 1962. Er stond geen hoes bij en toen Koelewijn aan Wim om de plaat vroeg om eventueel zelf het label te scannen, moest die bekennen dat hij die plaat nergens kon vinden. Maar andere vezamelaars óók niet.

De zanger wist uiteraard nog wel dat hij in de jaren zestig "Bonnie Brons"

met z'n band had opgenomen, maar het is hem nooit gelukt om waar dan ook die plaat op de kop te tikken. Nagevraagd kon men bij de vroegere platenmaatschappij ook niet meer dan het plaatnummer vinden. Dus kan het zijn dat de plaat toentertijd wél is aangekondigd, maar nooit is uitgebracht.

Daarom wist Peter natuurlijk metéén, dat dat nummer op deze triple CD moest komen! Trouwens: hij heeft een paar jaar later wel "Bonnie Brons" nog eens opgenomen met het Lowland Trio (zie op de site).

Peter Koelewijn heeft diverse van zijn songs in andere talen opgenomen. Dat is goed te zien opp de site bij de singles. Maar er zijn Engelse opnamen die nooit, waar dan ook, zijn uitgebracht. Dat zijn de Engelse "Conny", "Lonnie", "Angeline" en "Robbie". Die moesten natuurlijk eveneens op deze verzamelaar.

Ook heeft Peter de songs op de LP "Het beste in mij is niet goed genoeg voor jou" laten vertalen en die liedjes als demo's ingezongen.

Dat allemaal in 1978 op verzoek van Freddy Haayen, die toentertijd directeur was van Polydor in de VS. Maar meer dan mooie beloften had die niet in huis. Het hele project is nooit doorgegaan. Dat materiaal is niet voor deze CD gebruikt.

Er is nog overwogen om ook Koelewijn hits als "Alice, who the X is Alice?" (als Gompie) op dit drieluik te zetten, maar daar is van afgestapt. Zo hoorden er, volgens Peter, ook geen platen op die hij in groepsverband heeft gemaakt. Zoals De Praatpalen.

Bij deze trippelaar is een boekje gesloten met daarin bijna alle single-hoezen, een uitgebreide biografie, foto's en jaartallen van releases. Uiteraard heeft men het meeste van de gegevens van Koelewijn's site gehaald.

De CD kwam tot stand in samenwerking met het Nationaal Pop Instituut.

Gary Brooker MBE (29 May 1945 – 19 February 2022) was an English singer and pianist, and the founder and lead singer of the rock band Procol Harum.

Brooker started a solo career and released his first solo album No More Fear of Flying in 1979.

Echoes in the Night was the album for all those fans who had been waiting eight years for a Procol Harum reunion. 

In addition to Gary Brooker's singing and keyboard work, it featured Procol organist Matthew Fisher, lyricist Keith Reid, and drummer B.J. Wilson. 

They didn't appear on every track, but when they got together, notably on the title song (which also featured Eric Clapton), "Saw the Fire," and especially the ambitious "Ghost Train," Procol Harum was back. 

Though it is true that there is a lot of Matthew Fisher on this, some lyrics by Keith Reid, and some drums by BJ Wilson, the sound is much less like Procol Harum than on his previous solo albums. Really, "Lead Me to the Water" is Gary's strongest and most Procol-like solo album. "No More Fear of Flying" would come next.

This album and "Prodigal Strangers" (from 1985 and 1991 respectively) sound the most different from the rest of the Procol Harum and Gary Brooker catalog. The slick and synthesized production sounds quite artificial compared to the more natural and organic approach of the rest of the Procol/Brooker musical library. It could be Matthew Fisher who was at fault, since he would have played a big role on both, including in production. Echoes in the Night suffers in that it has very little guitar on it, and maybe only two noticeable solos where you actually are drawn to a guitar being present. BJ's drumming on a few tracks competes with drummers Henry Spinetti, Matt Lettley, and what sounds like drum machines and/or sequencers.

The strongest songs are "Saw the Fire", "Count Me Out", and "Ghost Train". Many of the others are mediocre, though still listenable. Gary's strong voice on even weaker tracks brings them up a bit. I mean, it's so of hard to fault THAT VOICE. It's just too bad that the drums and guitars were not stronger, and the female vocals were gone. That would have helped tremendously. I still don't understand the hoopla over the song "The Long Goodbye". It featured in later live Procol sets, and became the title of the symphonic Procol album, but just seems like a lukewarm and tepid track.

Lisa Boray And Friends - Wow (2005)

Lisa Schulte Nordholt (Lisa Boray) (Breda, 26 januari 1956) is een Nederlandse zangeres die zowel onder haar eigen naam optreedt en platen uitbrengt als in vele bands zingt; onder andere in American Gypsy, Houseband en Navel. 

Ook is zij erg actief als backing vocalist bij verschillende artiesten; zij zong bijvoorbeeld bij Wally Tax en Herman Brood.

Boray zong in de tweede helft van de jaren zeventig bij de Amsterdamse Houseband. Verder was ze ook een tijdje actief in de band Navel, waarmee ze 1 LP opnam (A rainy day at Chateau Lafite '42). 

Ze nam plaats in een gelegenheidsformatie met Kimm Hekker en Patricia Maessen, waarmee 1 single werd opgenomen en ze zong een tijdje bij American Gypsy. Daarnaast was ze in de eerste helft van de jaren tachtig zo'n beetje op elke belangrijke Nederlandse plaat te horen, bijvoorbeeld van Earth & Fire, de Margriet Eshuijs Band en Lori Spee. 

Tien jaar na haar met een Edison bekroonde album The Need To Be brengt Lisa Boray in 2005 de cd Wow! uit. 

De plaat bevat twaalf swingende tracks, waarvan de helft door de zangeres zelf zijn geschreven. Wow! bevat bijdragen van o.a. Hans Jansen (piano), Harry Emmery (bas) en Ton op 't Hof (drums/productie) en onder meer jazzy bewerkingen van de nummers Fever, Satisfaction en Round Midnight

One of many records that I snagged out of crates that were headed for oblivion (a.k.a. the storage warehouse) at my old job. 

The A side is funkier, weirder, and arguably more interesting than the B side, which is still good but falls into a comparatively standard disco groove. 

It's not gonna change your life, but it's a super fun record, and the synth break in "Astro Boogie" alone is worth the price of admission
